Simple explanation of what SR22 Insurance is and how to get it!

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a financial responsibility filing attached to your auto insurance and is filed with the DMV.  It’s basically a form that is sent by your car insurance company to the DMV that lets them know you have valid liability insurance.  If at any time your policy becomes cancelled, an SR-26 is sent by your carrier to the DMV that lets them know your car insurance has been cancelled.  This will usually result in the suspension of your driver’s license.

How do I get an SR22?

You can call your auto insurance company and ask if they can add an SR22 filing to your current policy.  Not all insurance companies issue SR22 filings so you may have to switch in order to obtain an SR-22.  If your company doesnt issue SR22 forms then your best bet is to find an agency or brokerage.  Usually an agent or broker works with multiple carriers that offer SR22 insurance and because of that, they are able to offer the lowest rate available between their carriers.

How much does SR-22 insurance cost?

SR22’s are fairly inexpensive, most insurance companies will charge a onetime filing fee of around $20.  The main cost associated with an SR-22 is the actual cost of the liability auto insurance.  Remember, an SR-22 is only a filing with the DMV to let them know that you’re carrying valid liability car insurance.  Since car insurance rates vary from person to person, the true cost of an SR-22 depends on your specific situation as well.  For your personalized free quote on SR22 Auto Insurance from OnGuard Insurance, please call us at (888) 99-QUOTE to speak to a licensed agent or request your SR22 insurance quote online.

Why do I need an SR-22 filing?

An SR22 filing is usually required by the DMV after something has happened with your driving privileges.  If your license has been suspended, usually due to a DUI, or if you were involved in an accident while not having valid auto insurance, the DMV may require you carry valid auto insurance in order to receive your driver’s license back.  An SR-22 is a filing from your auto insurance company to the DMV letting them know you have an active auto insurance policy; it’s basically a way for the DMV to keep you on check regarding your auto insurance.  If your insurance policy cancels at any time, the insurance company must inform the DMV which will usually result in the suspension of your license again.  If you don’t own a car you will still need to purchase a non owner SR22 insurance policy in order to get your license back.  For a free non owner SR-22 insurance quote in California, please contact OnGuard Insurance at (888) 99-QUOTE.
